This is a photo taken by Alex Hofford, a Hong Kong China photographer. It shows the wealth gap of Hong Kong.
As we can see in the photo, there is an old beggar who is sitting outside the luxury brand store, ‘Louis Vuitton’. They are the main focuses inside the boundaries of the photo. Moreover, the old beggar is at the lower side of the photo while the luxury brand store is located on the upper part of the photo. I think the photographer uses these framing and composition aims to show the audience the contrast between the wealth and poverty in Hong Kong.
As ‘Louis Vuitton’ is one of the favorite brands of Hong Kong wealthy people, therefore there is no doubt that they can represent the wealthy life of a small group of Hong Kong people. And for the old beggars, we can see that she is just sitting outside the store with a hopeless emotion and begging hands which can let the audience feel her eager to receive help from others through this photo.
Moreover, the old beggar only occupies a small part of the photo while the ‘Louis Vuitton’ store fills up nearly the whole photo. I think the photographer tries to empathize nowadays; wealthy people have a higher social level then the poor people. It also shows that wealthy people is controlling the society while the poor people is the group who is controlled by the rich people and is gaining less help from the society.
Also, the plain and black bag of the beggar for basic purpose of carrying things and the beautiful luxury bags inside the store for fashion purpose shows the huge differences of living standard between the rich and the poor which the rich people are not care about there basic needs to survive, they only concern about how to enjoy their life through different luxury things while the poor people are striking for their basic needs every day without enjoyment.
After seeing this photo, I impressed a lot, I hope after seeing this photo, people can start to think about the problem of huge wealth gap in Hong Kong and help the poor people.
